The Villiera Bush Vine Sauvignon Blanc 2022 recognised as one of the best Sauvignon Blancs in the world when it was awarded the 2023 Concours du Mondial du Sauvignon Tonnellerie Sylvain Trophy – Revelation Oaked Sauvignon.
A significant achievement amid stiff competition. Over 1200 entries from across the globe were evaluated by fifty international judges. Only 28% were awarded medals from 20 different wine producing countries.
We are especially pleased to receive this accolade for one of our reserve white wines and the prominence it garners for South African Sauvignon Blancs. It also highlights the importance of preserving old heritage vineyards as this wine was made from our old bush vines planted in 1984. The single bush vine vineyard has the ability to produce a unique, intense style of wine. Two separate pickings were done as the rootstocks vary and each contributes different flavours to the wine. After pressing and racking the wine was matured in bigger formats for the new wood portion as Xander Grier (fourth generation of the Grier family) believes this works best for this wine style and the specific vineyard block. The 2022 vintage consists of 80% new French oak and 20% older barrels.
The result is a wine with added complexity and enhanced structure that shows hints of green pepper and yellow fruit with some oak spice. The oak maturation and concentration of this wine means it will age beautifully and benefit further from time in the bottle. The style typifies the terroir it grows in and embraces new trends in winemaking.
